    FOREWARD

The Advertising Association is a federation of 24 trade bodies representing the advertising and promotional marketing industries including advertisers, agencies, media and support services. It is the only body that speaks for all sides of an industry worth over ?17 billion in 2000. Further information about the AA, its membership and remit is available on our website at www.adassoc.org.uk Its remit concerns the mutual interests of the business as a whole. It operates in a complementary way with the vested interests of its members who have specific roles for their individual sectors. The AA speaks as 'the common voice' for all on:

    • Promoting public understanding of, and respect for, commercial communication and its role in promoting competition, innovation and economic and social progress in society;
    • Upholding standards and the principle of self-regulation;
    • Providing information, research and statistics about the advertising business;
    • Combating unjustified restrictions and outright bans on commercial communication for freely and legally available products or services.

The Advertising Association exists to provide a co-ordinated service in the interests of its wider membership, i.e. the individual companies that make up this large, diverse and competitive business. Its remit is 'to promote and protect the rights, responsibilities and role of advertising' in the UK. This is in line with Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which recognises commercial freedom of speech as a right, alongside political and artistic freedoms of speech. The AA is a non-profit-making company, limited by guarantee, and funded by a combination of subscriptions, donations and revenue-raising activities such as seminars and publications.

    SELF REGULATION

One can neither promote nor defend the indefensible. The right of freedom of commercial speech is neither absolute nor unconditional. All parts of the industry - advertisers, agencies and the media - therefore have a long-term interest in protecting this freedom by upholding its probity.

Since its formation in 1926, the AA has been pivotal in the development of standards and effective regulation. It was instrumental in setting up the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in 1962 and, in 1975, in enabling the foundation of the Advertising Standards Board of Finance (ASBOF) to provide secure and independent funding for the ASA at a time of severe legislative threat from Government. The AA is a board member of ASBOF and a member of the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP), whose Advertising and Sales Promotion Codes are independently administered by the ASA.

The AA is the only industry body, along with government, that has a right of consultation with the Chairman of ASBOF in the appointment of the independent Chairman of the ASA. The current Director-General of the AA is Chairman of CAP.

In 1991, faced with a direct challenge from the European Commission, the AA again played a key role in the formation of the European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA), to demonstrate that self-regulation, within a statutory framework, could be an effective alternative to restrictive legislation at the European level. The EASA has continued to develop and now fulfils a prominent and effective role in Brussels.

The AA is the UK national co-ordinator responsible for the UK financial contribution of the EASA.

    ?

    HOW WE WORK

The fact is that the AA is its members. They learn about, review and direct its activities at every level - on the Council, which is the legal and representative body; in the Executive Committee and in the various committees and task forces operating within specific remits.

It is imperative that all parts of the business are represented in the development of AA policies and actions; membership of these groups is drawn from both trade associations and key individual practitioners. This ensures the setting of priorities, maximum effectiveness and minimum duplication of effort and a constant readiness to respond to changing contexts and new challenges and issues as they arise.

Every week, AA members are provided with a detailed briefing of all AA activities, industry developments and other news.

The four key officers of the Association - the President, Chairman and two Vice-Chairmen - are always well-known and respected practitioners from the business, representing the advertiser, agency and media sectors.

    ?

    COMMUNICATIONS

The Advertising Association monitors, analyses and advises on public policy and legislation affecting commercial communications, in Westminster, Whitehall, Strasbourg and Brussels.

The AA is active in organising and leading campaigns where proposed advertising restrictions may affect a product, service, or the media, or have implications for the advertising business as a whole, and where an advertising tripartite position is requested by Government, Parliamentary Committees or other public authorities. Particular areas of campaigning include food, tobacco, alcohol, advertising to children and self-regulation. Executive briefs on such topics are published regularly for AA members and are available free from the Information Centre, or can be accessed by clicking here.

The Advertising Association has an extensive promotional programme which seeks to inform and foster a better understanding of advertising issues amongst defined groups of opinion leaders including the media, politicians, academics and teachers.

It arranges regular meetings with Ministers, MPs (including substantial activity at party conferences) and civil servants; produces resource materials for schools; publishes pamphlets on topical advertising issues and regularly briefs key journalists on issues of overall concern to the industry.Wherever possible the AA works with its member associations in the UK and with appropriate groupings and individuals in Europe.

    THE ADVERTISING INFORMATION GROUP

The AA is a founding member of the Advertising Information Group, a European tripartite information monitoring and lobbying organization, founded in 1996 with other European advertising tripartites. It publishes a fortnightly newsletter 'NOTICES' which details and analyses legislative and political developments affecting all aspects of commercial communications in Europe and beyond, and holds discussion forums in Brussels.

Further information about the AA, its membership and remit is available on our website at www.adassoc.org.uk

We create powerful information management solutions using Internet and database architectures. Although we have very distinct preferences in terms of software platforms our solutions can be as unique as your needs.

What do you need to manage? People? Services? Products? Machines? Schedules? Finances? Reporting? E-commerce?

Our systems are designed to empower business people to use and harness technology to achieve goals rather than to be constrained by the limitations of their systems ? as is all too often the case in business today.

We design systems solutions in very close consultation with our Customers, we interpret their requirements through very careful analysis. We also design systems where the source code is not locked up in a black-box environment. The systems we design do not lock our Customers into Allied Westminster ?they are open and flexible enough, and professionally documented such that our Customers can, should they wish, move on to another vendor ? or we will train their staff to manage the system once we have cranked it into motion.

Most companies are happy that their information systems are up and running, and there is no recognition of the need to achieve peak performance from them ? not so with systems solutions from Allied Westminster. We believe that the true art of good systems implementation is not measured in how a system works, but what it really does for the business ? the impact it has on the bottom line.

We worry about our clients' businesses as if they were our own. We strive to build lifetime relationship with our clients.

    ANALYSIS ? DESIGN - IMPLEMENTATION ? TRAINING - SUPPORT

Talk to us if you want you require powerful systems solutions ? in your office, on the web, or both, and have not yet found suitable software.

My name is Andrew Hughes, and this website was produced in 2005 as a educational tool about the convertial subject of GM technology in particular the ethics of GM plants. The wesite was produced as part of a project for the third year of my BSc Biology degree at the University of Nottingham

I choose this topic due to my strong support of GM technologies and their use in foods. I personally think that GM will lead to better cheaper products in the short term and more usful novel products in the future. However I have attempted to review both sides of the arguement as best I can in order to provide a balanced view with the idea of allowing you the reader to make your own decision.

Offer genuine value to your ?Accumulator? clients and earn extra income.

Optimoney is a Financial Services marketing system for those who advise clients in the accumulation stage of their financial life.

It focuses on the four key areas of:

    1. Cash flow management.
    2. Debt management.
    3. Wealth accumulation.
    4. Lifestyle goals.

Our system is "white labelled", allowing for personalisation by companies using the system. We cover the whole process from prospecting and presentation, right through to client support. The components are as follows:

    1. Marketing: Prospecting ideas and procedures, together with a professionally designed electronic presentation, suitable for individual or seminar use.

    2. Calculation software: Comprehensive modelling software that incorporates every aspect of our four key areas and also includes insurance needs analysis and retirement planner.

    3. Client Folder and reports: Complete client reports and a folder that incorporates all aspects of your clients' financial life.

    4. Client support: Stand-alone budget planning software for clients, and review system and reporting.

    5. System support: Guidance on procedures and document templates for every aspect of the system, including data collection, client engagement and thank you letter.

Why Optimoney? It is our view that traditional marketing and software systems have largely ignored the four key areas that we focus on, yet our experience shows us that these areas of financial management are prominent in the minds of clients.
Optimoney is a powerful system for prospecting, processing and reviewing 'accumulator' clients. It provides them with monthly cash flow targets that can lead them to accelerate the repayment of debt and achieve lifestyle goals and financial success. It also provides them with the necessary tools to help them achieve that success.
Our experience also shows us that clients are very willing to pay for this service with both an upfront establishment fee and ongoing review fees. Optimoney is a powerful system that can be easily learned and embraced by both experienced and new advisers.

The Marketing Council exists to help British business increase wealth creation and competitiveness through marketing.

The decision to set up the Marketing Council was taken on January 4, 1995 by a group of industrialists led by Lord Marshall, Chairman of British Airways. Other founder members were Sir George Bull, Sir Peter Davis, Sir John Egan, Sir Alistair Grant and Sir Michael Perry, CBE. Each of them had a personal commitment to marketing and establishment of The Marketing Council.

The industrialists and the then Department of Employment commissioned research into the state of marketing in the UK. From this they recognised that there were marketing strengths in a number of British companies, but noted that there were too few of these. In many companies marketing had become isolated and had lost influence on company strategy. The group debated the need for improved marketing in order to increase wealth creation and competitiveness; and they discussed the aims, agenda, resource and organisation associated with this.

A number of leading companies offered their support and seed money including the Argyll Group, BAA, British Airways, British Gas, British Steel, BT , Ford, Glaxo-Wellcome, Grand Metropolitan, ICI, National Westminster Bank, Prudential, Tarmac and Unilever.

Subsequently, a significant number of of the top 500 UK companies have committed their support.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Marketing Society nominate members of the Executive Board. The Chairman is Professor Laurie Wood. The Board comprises Frank Auton, Stephen Callender, David Campbell, Raoul Pinnell and John Pratt.

The CBI, The IPA, The ISBA, The Advertising Association, The Marketing Society, The Chartered Institute of Marketing, Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, The Market Research Society, The Sales Qualification Board, The Department for Education and Employment and DTI also support The Marketing Council and are represented on its Advisory Board.
